Assemblymember Dr. Patel Becomes Chair of Assembly Education Committee
SACRAMENTO — Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel (AD-76) has been appointed by Speaker Robert Rivas as Chair of the Assembly Committee, effective March 2. The committee oversees TK-12 education policy for California’s six million public school students—the largest state education system in the nation.
The appointment places Patel—a research scientist and former school board trustee—at the helm of one of the Legislature’s most consequential policy committees, at a moment when students, teachers, parents, and schools are navigating an increasingly complex set of challenges.
Patel represents the 76th Assembly District in San Diego County and brings a rare combination of credentials to approach these challenges: a background in scientific research, hands-on experience governing a local school district, and firsthand experience as a mother of three navigating California’s public school system. This background shapes a policymaking approach grounded in evidence, accountability, and a direct understanding of how decisions made in Sacramento play out in classrooms.
As Chair, she is focused on improving student outcomes by building a strong educator workforce, aligning programs for coherence and accountability, and eliminating barriers that limit schools’ ability to serve students effectively.
“California’s students deserve a legislature that approaches education policy the same way a scientist approaches a problem: with rigor, humility, and an unrelenting focus on what the evidence says actually works,” said Assemblymember Patel. “The decisions the Assembly Education Committee makes will shape the future of millions of children, our workforce, and our state. I am honored that Speaker Rivas has entrusted me with this role, and I take this responsibility extremely seriously.”
“Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel represents precisely the caliber of leadership California’s students need and deserve,” said the Speaker of the Assembly, Robert Rivas. “Her longstanding commitment to public service, and depth of expertise in education, positions her to continue to strengthen our classrooms. Dr. Patel understands that the measure of a great society is found in how it educates its children — and I have no doubt she will meet that measure. California’s families, teachers and students are fortunate to have her as their champion.”
